What's the Deal with Stink Bugs?

Why Are Stink Bugs
Hard to Treat?

Once stink bugs are inside a home they will make their way into attic spaces, wall voids, crawl spaces, and underneath floors. Once there, they will remain until the weather warms up again in the spring and then move back outside to feed and breed once again. Essentially, treating your home before stink bugs make their way inside during the fall is the ideal course of action in order to prevent future infestations.

Risks Associated
With Stink Bugs

While stink bugs don’t bite, making their danger to most residential homeowners minimal, they will leave a foul odor if they feel threatened or get squished (even if it happens by accident!). “Stink bug smell” is unpleasant, lingers in the air for hours, and is sometimes described as having a similar scent as rotten coconut. Stink bugs produce this odor in their thoraxes in an effort to ward off predators, and can actually spray the chemical several inches.

Where Do Stink Bugs Come From?

Stink bugs are most often outdoor agricultural pests, however when the weather starts to cool in the fall, stink bugs will migrate to the sunny side of homes and other buildings to seek warmth. From here, they will enter the structures through any gaps, cracks, and crevices that they find.

What Ants Are On LI?

On Long Island, there are several types of ants that frequently invade homes and commercial facilities:

  • Acrobat Ants
  • Argentine Ants
  • Citronella Ants
  • Field Ants
  • Little Black Ants
  • Odorous House Ants
  • Pavement Ants
  • Pharaoh Ants
  • Carpenter Ants

What Attracts Ants?

Like most other insects, ants come into your home looking for food and water

Once the food is found, the worker ant will eat some and then, head right back to the colonies’ nest.

Once back at the nest, other ants will be recruited to follow the pheromone trail back to the food.

What Do Ants Eat?

Ants have a wide variety of food they like to munch on in your house. Each type of ant has a specific food they like to eat.

For example Little Black Ants enjoy the same food we do. Odorous House Ants love sweets!

You Have Ants. Now What?

Ants tend to avoid eating bait from "easy" to get rid of ant products. The chemicals can be toxic if applied incorrectly.  We recommend that you save your time and money from do it yourself pesticides.
